Time for a Tooth Extraction: What to Expect from this Dental Procedure

Last updated 7 years ago

Most Americans will have at least one tooth extracted over the course of their lifetime.  If you’re preparing for a tooth extraction with your NYC dentist, then check out this overview on what to expect from this common dental procedure.

Reasons for Tooth Extraction

The most common reasons for a tooth extraction include chipped or broken teeth, cavities and extreme tooth decay, infection, abscesses and periodontal disease. Some cosmetic dentists may also recommend tooth extraction in preparation for dental braces, Invisalign, or a similar orthodontic procedure.

Tooth extraction methods are also commonly used to remove impacted wisdom teeth. Your wisdom teeth, also known as your third molars, typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. However, very few individuals have enough space in their dental arch to support these four extra teeth. When wisdom teeth cannot erupt properly, they tend to grow in sideways or become impacted below the surface of your gum-line. This not only causes extreme pressure and discomfort, but also shifts the surrounding teeth, damaging years of previous orthodontic work.

Procedural Steps

The procedural steps will vary depending on the type of tooth being extracted. For example, cracked, broken, or diseased teeth can typically be removed through manual extraction under local anesthetic. Wisdom teeth, on the other hand, almost always require surgical extraction. After administering general or intravenous anesthesia, your emergency dentist will make a small incision along the gum-line above the impacted wisdom teeth. Your dentist will then expose the impacted tooth for easier extraction before closing the incisions with biodegradable sutures. Most patients find that they are able to return to normal activities within 24-48 hours following the procedure, while the sutures typically dissolve after 10 days.
