Top Tips for Maintaining Your Dental Health Between Dentist Visits | Cosmetic Dentistry New York

Last updated 7 years ago

Routine dental cleanings are a must when it comes to maintaining the health and condition of your teeth and gums. Unfortunately, most dental insurance providers will only cover two dental cleanings each year. What can you do in the meantime? Consider these top tips for maintaining your dental health between visits to your NYC dentist.

Brush and Floss Daily

The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Try to find a toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Acceptance, as this ensures the safety and effectiveness of the product. Frayed and worn bristles are ineffective and can actually damage your gums, so be sure to replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Individuals with limited mobility of the shoulders, arms, or hands may benefit from using an electric toothbrush instead.

Stay Hydrated

In addition to daily brushing and flossing, drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day is a great way to keep your gums healthy and protect against tooth decay. Plaque is a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth. Drinking water not only helps remove plaque and bacteria, but also reduces mouth acidity. Tap water that contains fluoride has also been shown to reduce cavities by as much as 60%.

Eat Properly

You know which foods to stay away from, but did you know that certain foods can actually improve the condition of your teeth? According to the Academy of General Dentistry, some of the best foods for a healthy smile include:

  • Apples: This fruit increases saliva flow, keeping your mouth moist and rinsing away bacteria and acid.
  • Soy and Eggs: Protein-rich foods help replenish cells, keeping blood flowing to the nerve endings inside of your teeth.
  • Carrots, Celery, and Bell Peppers: Crunchy vegetables cleanse your gums.
  • Dark Chocolate: Products with at least 80% cocoa contain chemicals that fight plaque buildup.
